Sydney Harbour YHA

Inside Sydney Harbour YHA's 6 share female bedroom.

Before flying to Sydney I struggled to look for a place I can stay at near the city. I've inspected rooms for rent but then some are just too crowded for me. It finally came to a point wherein I had no choice but to look for hostels and my first choice was Sydney Harbour YHA.

First thing that comes to mind when you think about staying in a hostel is budget, which it is actually. Since I'm staying in Sydney for more than month I really needed to have a strict budget. Staying in a hotel or even renting out an apartment is not an option.

 
Check out their female-only sharing room. Hostels usually provide a locker so don't forget to bring your own padlock. Compared to other hostels, Harbour YHA probably offers the biggest rooms.

 
Plus all their rooms have their own private ensuite.

Take note though that rooms don't always look that neat and clean, I was just lucky to be the first to check-in. :) But to give you an idea here's a sneak peek of what rooms really look like (specially when most of your roommates are backpackers), click here and here. Moving on...

This YHA branch is built above archaeological remnants of colonial Sydney so most free walking tours pass by to check it out.

 
What I like most about this hostel is that they offer free Wi-Fi in the lounge area. Plus there's a large fully-equipped kitchen where you can store and cook your own food. 

 
They also have an awesome rooftop with a BBQ area that has an equally awesome view of the harbour.

Tired of walking around the city? Why not stay in and have a movie night?

Overall I really liked my stay at Sydney Harbour YHA. ;) I'd definitely recommend this place to family or friends traveling to Sydney for a week. Their rates start at $38.00AUD per person per day, that's for the sharing room. Apart from Harbour YHA, I've also stayed at Railway Square YHA and Bounce Sydney which are both clean and is located just right outside Central station.

Hotel Swiss Star

Our fourth home during our European tour, Hotel Swiss Star in Wetzikon, Switzerland.

From Liechtenstein we traveled for another 2.5 hours heading to our next destination which is Switzerland. But before we move forward to our tour of Mt. Titlis and Lucerne, check out my review of the Hotel Swiss Star, one of my faves during this trip. ;)



I like how modern the hotel looks like, this is their double room.


It was very spacious and and sunny too since windows were as high as the ceiling.


We had enough space for our stuff and luggages so it wasn't hard to move around.

 
Bathroom was superb, very chic, modern and clean too!


I forgot to mention that the hotel has motion sensor lights which is good for security but even better since they save energy. ;)


The overnight rate for their double room costs around ₱6500, good for 2 pax with breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast, did I enjoy their breakfast? Well it was like 50-50 since they served the usual bread and cheese with a few cold cuts here and there. But I love that they served us hard boiled eggs. Haha. It was something new compared to what the other hotels served for breakfast. I even got to bring some because other tourists didn't want to eat theirs. At least I now have baon inside the bus. Hihihi. Apart from that there was a grocery nearby so I was able to buy swiss chocolates for pasalubong. ;) Overall, I loved this hotel so if this is part of your tour then go for it!

Casa Minerva Tagaytay

Early January I got an email from owner of this house inviting me to check out her newly converted bed and breakfast (b&b) home in Tagaytay. Timing was perfect because my boss wanted to have an out of town planning for our team and she agreed to stay here instead of booking somewhere else. This post is basically an ex-deal but I shall try my best to give constructive comments and suggestions for improvement of the property. :)


Moving on.. According to the owner, the house was built back in 1999 and served as their vacation home during her younger years. When her dad died in 2008, the house got neglected and her mom wanted to get rid of the property by selling it. Of course she didn't agree so in 2013, they went back to check the condition of the house and from there they decided to restore and convert it to a b&b house.


Casa Minerva officially opened last November 2014. I asked her who's Minerva (LOL, chismosa ba?) and said she's her favorite Roman goddess.


Our team arrived around 1:30PM but decided to chill muna by watching a movie. There's cable TV and WiFi. Meanwhile, I kept myself busy by documenting parts of the house for my blog. :)


Here's the masters bedroom. It has its own bath but failed to take a photo (may tao kasi sa loob, lol).


Here's room number 1 that's good for 2 pax.


Meanwhile, room number 2 is good for 3 pax. There's an extra bed under the right bed.


Here's the common bath for rooms 1 and 2. My only complaint is that water pressure is low.. probably because someone was also taking a shower from the other bathrooms. But at least they have water heaters installed. ;)

By the way there's a 4th room downstairs that has its own bath too but forgot to take a photo. That's where our driver stayed for the night. ;)


Moving on, of course you're allowed to bring your own food and prepare it in their kitchen. Very convenient din coz you no longer need to go out. ;) But if I may suggest, maybe the owner can add a water dispenser para no need to bring our own right? While I'm at it, maybe you can also add towels. Not that I forgot to bring my own towel, for some travelers it's easier to pack without one.


I like that they maximized the space of the house by adding an outdoor area like the mini garden on the left and a pool on the right. Parang ang sarap tumambay dito with friends on a hot summer day.


The garage can accommodate 1-2 cars but I'm sure management will allow parking outside since di naman busy street yung location ng house. :)


What I like about this house is that it feels like home away from home. Yes, it may look a little bit old but at least they were able to restore and earn something from it. ;)

Going to Bacolod anytime soon? Check out Sugarland Hotel which is at the southern part of Bacolod City. The hotel is approximately 30-45 mins. from Bacolod-Silay Airport, 15 mins. from Bredco Port Terminal and 10-15 mins. away from the famous Lacson tourism strip by cab. :)


I got a standard room that costs ₱1,975 per night (via Asiatravel) that's inclusive of buffet breakfast for two. Take note that the rate I paid for was booked a month before the MassKara Festival.


I like their beds, orthopedic. And hindi masikip, very comfortable nung tulog ko. ;)


The room is very spacious but is definitely showing signs of wear and tear. Time to maybe do another renovation? But at least it's clean. And walang amoy. :)

 
The bathroom is very spacious too but like I said, mukhang naluma na. They need to replace towels, medyo hindi na siya maputi. Hehe.


Their TVs are cable-ready plus there's provided water in the fridge. :)


As for the breakfast, simple lang. May steamed and garlic rice. For the soup minsan arroz caldo minsan noodles. Everyday iba iba ang ulam which is good 'coz nakakaumay naman if 3 days straight paulit ulit breakfast. LOL.


That's my usual breakfast spot, alone but happy. I didn't get to try the pool though, parang ang awkward mag swimming na may nag b-breakfast sa tabi mo. Haha.

I like the location of this hotel because it's very quiet. If you're a party animal and coming to Bacolod for the MassKara Festival then I suggest you book in advanced for a hotel along Lacson St. like L'Fisher Chalet.

But if I may suggest, I hope the hotel provides shuttle service to Lacson in the near future. Kahit 2-3 roundtrips per day lang. That was the most hassle part for me, going to Lacson and back to my hotel. But it's all goooooood, at least I got to discover other parts of the city. ;)

As you all know, Singapore is one and will always be part of the most expensive cities in the world. Paolo (the boyfriend) had the opportunity to stay at the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) hotel last week when he attended the 2014 ASEAN Insurance Summit in Singapore. He stayed at a deluxe room and cheapest rate for that will cost you $339SGD (approximately ₱12,000) a night, exclusive of tax and other fees.


For someone who's kuripot, of course he won't pay that much for a hotel noh! This was made possible by their office, Commonwealth Insurance Company. Besides, the summit was also held at the MBS so the ASEAN Insurance Council offered special rates for attendees of the event. :) Let's move on to the room shall we?


Marina Bay Sands Deluxe Room


The 39-sqm room is very spacious if traveling solo or as a couple.


 

Room Features: Walk-in shower + Paiza bathroom amenities, iron and ironing board, in-room safe, complimentary high speed internet access, etc.


Since it was a "discounted" room, expect to get a limited view. LOL. Paolo initially wanted to have a city view room but then wala siya choice, ok na rin ang Gardens by the Bay. :)


They serve breakfast (buffet) at Rise Restaurant from 6:30-11:00AM.



Paolo kind of got bored because they served the same food during his stay.

He also had access to the stunning Sands SkyPark infinity pool and award-winning Banyan Tree Fitness Club kaya nga lang he got too preoccupied with the summit so he had no time to visit both.


He did have time, however, to go out and take photos around MBS despite the slightly smoggy weather.

 

Anyway, was it worth to experience Marina Bay Sands hotel? I think so. But I think this will be his first and last stay there. Hehe. Back in 2012, we stayed at Somerset Liang Court, a serviced apartment that was walking distance from Clark Quay and Fort Canning Park. Ok siya (sorry I forgot to blog about it) so you might wanna check it out too. ;)
